Switzerland Silver History

Switzerland is famous for its neutrality, and that stability extended to its currency. While neighboring countries suffered from hyperinflation and drastic debasement, Swiss silver coins maintained the .835 fine silver standard for nearly 100 years.

Because the design of the 1/2, 1, and 2 Franc (Helvetia Standing) has remained virtually unchanged since 1874, it is vital to check the dates. Silver was pulled from circulation in 1967, meaning any coin from 1968 or later is composed of cupro-nickel and holds no precious metal value.

STEALTH PRO TIP: The 1969 5-Franc coin is a "unicorn." While the smaller 1/2, 1, and 2 Francs switched to nickel in 1968, the 5-Franc coin actually had a final silver run in 1969 before transitioning. Always check your 5-Franc dates!
